Working Title Films is moving forward with a second ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ sequel, which has been in development since 2009, Entertainment Weekly is reporting. The production company, which is based at Universal, released the original film in 2001, which went on to gross $281 million worldwide. Its follow-up, 2004’s ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,’ was met with poor critical reviews, but still earned $262 million worldwide.
Not many details about the third film in the series has been release, but star Colin Firth, who portrayed Mark Darcy in the first two installments, hinted at a possible plot last year. He said that Bridget, who’s played by Renee Zellweger, and Mark can’t have children, which leads her to go back to Hugh Grant’s character Daniel Cleaver. After Bridget becomes pregnant with Daniel’s child, he leaves her, and Mark goes back to her.
The news of a third ‘Bridget Jones’ film comes after the London Evening Standard reported in March 2011 that author Helen Fielding, who wrote the two novels that the first two movies are based on, had begun writing a third novel in the series. At the time, she said there had been discussions about making another film, and she would be working on it.
