Title: Super Hybrid
Directed by: Eric Valette
Starring: Shannon Beckner, Oded Fehr and Ryan Kennedy
Running time: 94 minutes, Rated PG-13, available on standard DVD
A car is brought into a Chicago police impound garage after an accident. The mechanics who work there soon realize that the car has a mind of its own and is able to change its appearance to other car models to elude them, while devouring anyone who comes near.
Didn’t they do this before? Oh yeah, it was called Christine…and then Maximum Overdrive. Did we really need another “killer car” movie? The mechanics pop the hood and a den of blue snakes tries to attack them. The snakes look like some sort of mutant octopus, pirhana-snake. A tentacle grabs at the victim and bloodies the interior of the car, eventually crapping out some sort of blue slime with the jewelry of the person it just ate. The car changes models to trick the mechanics, but I’m betting they wrote that into the script because they didn’t have the budget to buy extras of the same car.
Oded Fehr is amazingly bad; the rest of the cast was just okay considering the script they had to work with. Why didn’t they check under the hood of each car they were about to get into, knowing there is a shape-changing killer car out there? After just having a bloody run in with the monster-car, a guy gets into a car, asks the other characters “Where are the keys?”, they realize it’s not the car they thought it was and dude gets eaten. The characters were just too stupid to care about.
The Blu-ray extra includes a behind the scenes look at the stunts and special effects, which fortunately were more entertaining than the actual movie, so it wasn’t a complete waste. These films seem more fun to make, while the finished product is pretty lame. I would give it an F, but because I got some laughs among the crapfest, it gets some extra points.
