‘Grand Piano’ screenwriter Damien Chazelle has signed onto pen the script for the sequel to the surprise summer 2010 hit film ‘The Last Exorcism,’ according to The Hollywood Reporter. The producers of the mockumentary horror movie decided to move ahead with a follow-up, as the original garnered $62.5 million worldwide against a budget of $1.6 million.
Chazelle will replace Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko, who penned ‘The Last Exorcism’ for Strike Entertainment. Studio Canal is financing the sequel, and production is expected to begin this fall.
The first film followed Evangelical preacher Cotton Marcus, played by Patrick Fabian, who decides to stop performing exorcisms. He allows a documentary crew to film his last exorcism, to show his work has been fraudulent. However, he’s surprised to learn that the young girl he’s come to help really is possessed.
