David R. Ellis, the helmer of the newly-released ‘Shark Night 3D,’ has signed on to direct the live action remake of the Japanese anime movie ‘Kite,’ Variety is reporting. Anant Singh and Brian Cox will produce the film through their independent production company Distant Horizon. Moises Cosio and Alejandro Saevich of Mexico’s Deetalle Films will co-produce the movie.
The original ‘Kite,’ which was directed by Yasuomi Umetsu, became a cult classic after it was released in 1998. Ellis’ version is being developed as a character-driven action film. The movie will follow a young woman who’s living in a failed state after a financial collapse, as the corrupt security force is profiting on the trafficking of young women. After the woman’s father, who was a cop, is killed by someone in the force, she vows to track his murderer down. His ex-partner agrees to help find the killer, but she never realizes that he’s the one who had her father killed.
The producers are currently casting ‘Kite,’ which is scheduled to begin filming in January 2012. Ellis, who has also directed such films as ‘Cellular,’ ‘Final Destination 2,’ ‘Snakes on a Plane’ and ‘The Final Destination,’ said he’s a big fan of Umetsu, and he’s honored to be directing the remake.
