HBO is close to ordering a pilot episode for a series based on the hit Jonathan Franzen novel “The Corrections”, and Anthony Hopkins has expressed interest in playing one of the central characters, AOL TV is reporting. The book is a multi-layered family drama that took place over several decades of the 20th century. It follows the lives of Alfred and Enid Lambert, an elderly Midwestern couple, and their three adult children.
Hopkins is rumored to be interested in playing stern patriarch Alfred, a retired railroad engineer. His body is starting to decline, as he’s suffering from Parkinson’s disease. However, his fellow Golden Globe-winner Donald Sutherland is also interested in taking on the role of Alfred.
It’s being reported that producer Scott Rudin and writer-director Noah Baumbach are close to signing a series deal with HBO. Rudin will serve as the show’s executive producer alongside Baumbach and Franzen, who co-wrote the adaptation. Baumbach is also attached to direct the series.
There have been reports of possible movie and television adaptations of the award-winning book since it was released in 2001. ‘The Reader’ director Stephen Daldry expressed an interest in helming a film version, with ‘The Hours’ screenwriter David Hare penning the script. Paul Newman and Gene Hackman expressed interest in playing Alfred.
