Eduardo Sencion killed four people and wounded eight others on September 6 at an IHOP restaurant in Carson City, Nevada before he shot himself in the head, MSNBC is reporting. The gunman pulled into IHOP’s parking lot n a minivan with a yellow “Support Our Troops” sticker on it, opened fire and continued into the restaurant. He walked towards a table of uniformed National Guard members before shooting each one of them, and fatally killing three of them. One of the wounded National Guard members later died at an area hospital.
The reserve military force members’ deaths came at a time when lawmakers weren’t in session. Immediately after the shooting, officials did prepare for a citywide assault, however.
It’s still unknown why Sencion would use an aK-47 assault rifle on members of his hometown. Police are still investigating whether he was specifically targeting the military; however, Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong said he didn’t think Sencion set out to target people in the military.
FBI special agent Patrick Turner said “the investigation has not shown any links to terrorism or militant groups. We do not believe the National Guard soldiers were targeted specifically, however, that is still under investigation.”
Sencion’s family said he was mentally troubled, but he didn’t have a criminal history. “The sheriff may never know the motive,” Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Chuck Allen said.
