MTV is considering picking up the series adaptation of the graphic novel ‘Locke & Key,’ Deadline is reporting. The cable network’s programming chief David Janollari has yet to meet with the show’s producers, but he did like the pilot, which was given to him on DVD.
The news of Janollari’s interest comes after the companies behind the pilot, 20th Century Fox, K/O Paper Products and DreamWorks TV, shopped it to other networks, including Syfy. The science-fiction cable network ultimately passed on ‘Locke & Key,’ whose pilot was written by Josh Friedman and was directed by Mark Romanek, reportedly due to the series’ high budget costs. With the increasing price to keep the production alive, Fox decided to let the actors’ options expire on June 30.
But IDW, the publisher of the ‘Locke & Key’ graphic novel, which was written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez, organized a screening of the pilot at this year-s Comic-Con. The screening was followed by a panel discussion with executive producers Friedman, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The pilot was then sent to MTV.
However, there has been doubt over whether or not MTV will pick up ‘Locke & Key.’ The thriller series is a major departure for the network’s current scripted programming, which focuses mainly on high school comedies and dramas.
