Hunger star Michael Fassbender has taken home the Best Actor Award (the Coppa Volpi prize) for his leading role in Steve McQueen’s movie ‘Shame’. Fassbender played the role of a New Yorker by the name of Brandon, who is described as a sex addict that falls to desperate lows while dealing with his mentally ill live in sister, played by Carey Mulligan. The movie, coined “a cousin of American Psycho, although no killer” by The Hollywood Reporter, is one of two films being presented at the Venice Film Festival featuring Fassbender. The thirty-three year old star is also part of David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method, where he plays Carl Jung.
Meanwhile, Shame’s reputation has already earned itself a spot on Fox Searchlight’s slate. The movie house, who reportedly beat out a very interested Weinstein Company and several others, has purchased the rights to McQueen”s raw drama with plans to release the flick at some point next year. The only problem, sources are predicting Searchlight will mostly make some changes to the film because of its sexually graphic nature. Either way, Michael Fassbender fans will still be pouring into theaters to check out the star, in what has been dubbed an impressively awesome performance.
