First, there was a bit of scared outrage over Baz Lurhmann deciding to put “The Great Gatsby” in 3D. But now, the dust that settled has risen again due to Hugh Jackman saying that 3D is being mulled over for the film adaptation of “Les Miserables.”
According to CinemaBlend via Collider, the actor said that Tom Hooper’s film adaptation of the Broadway musical is “in discussion” for 3D treatment. “Honestly, that’s probably gonna be part of what the tests are about, to see what that does,” he said. He specified that if they find the technology doesn’t add anything to the film, they won’t use it, but the primary use of the 3D tests are to see if the technology will work with character and emotion.
How can 3D possibly help with character and emotion? That’s not what 3D was invented for–it was invented for the visual element of having things pop out at you, and I would think that the “emotion” and “character” part deal with the screenwriting and the acting, not the technology. I’m confused and perplexed, but I’m intrigued.
