Talk about a role Johnny Depp was made for! The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Johnny Depp will produce a film inspired by the life of classic children’s author Dr. Seuss through his company, Infinitum Nihil and Illumination Entertainment. He might also star as Seuss in the film. Universal Pictures will distribute.
The film will be family-friendly, but producers say it will not be so candy-coated as Disney and Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” However, they aren’t saying the film won’t be without any special eye-candy. In any case, it sounds like the film will be a very glossy breeze through the author’s life–no deep-digging biopic storytelling will probably be found here.
As everyone knows, Dr. Seuss is the beloved children’s author of “The Lorax,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “The Cat in the Hat,” “Horton Hears a Who,” and “Oh, the Places You Will Go.” He also made a lot of political cartoons opposing fascism and communism, as well as addressing social issues like discrimination against African-Americans and anti-Semitism. He originally was in support of the Japanese American internment in America during World War II, but he later had a turnaround when the wrote “Horton Hears a Who,” which is supposedly an allegory for the Hiroshima bombing and the America’s post-war occupation of Japan. He also dedicated the book to a Japanese friend.
