The Hollywood Reporter has taken some time out to analyze the career of Tom Cruise, an actor who, theoretically, should be out of business.
Cruise’s career has taken a bit of a nosedive in recent years–quite a few of his movies, “Knight and Day” being one, have failed to be domestic box-office hits and his public relationship with Scientology has made him look less “adaptable” (for lack of a better word) to some of the viewing public. His public spat with Brooke Shields over anti-depressants and his antics on the now-defunct “Oprah Winfrey Show” due to his marriage to Katie Holmes made him look unhinged, and therefore, unmarketable. But he’s still been marketable despite all of the downturns. So how does the star–who will be in the upcoming “Mission: Impossible–Ghost Protocol”, “Rock of Ages,” and “One Shot,” the sci-fi war film “We Mortals Are” among other films–keep getting work?
One producer The Hollywood Reporter talked to said the studios are looking to him again for films. “The studios are interested in him again,” the producer said.
The site/magazine has compiled several reasons as to why Cruise is still the guy many studios go to when they need a star. According to the article, Cruise still brings bank internationally, one example being the foreign gross for “Knight and Day,” which was $186 million. Even if a movie does bad here, it’s great when it can make its money back overseas, which means that, at least monetarily, the movie was a success. He also looks much younger than his actual age, which means he can still take on action roles without looking ridiculous. Also, he’s an actor that has a lot of goodwill with people in the business due to his charisma and ability to work well with others and get on good terms with them. He also knows the meaning of committing to the lifestyle of a movie star by keeping a good rapport with fans, which translates to more money in his pocket.
