HBO has announced that they will be rolling out a new movie entitled ‘Behind the Candelabra’, a tale following the iconic pianist Liberace. Set to play the famous man is seasoned actor Michael Douglas with Good Will Hunting star Matt Damon to take the role of his lover, Scott Thorson.
Director Steven Soderbergh, who will be helming the feature before his rumored retirement, will be working with a script from ‘Water for Elephants’ writer Richard LaGravenese. The film will reportedly delve into the relationship between Liberace and Thorson. Steve Weintraub of ‘His Way’ will be executive producer on the Liberace flick, a biopic he has been waiting to make for a while.
“I’ve wanted to make a film about Liberace for a very long time, and after the amazing experience I had with HBO on ‘His Way,’ I knew that they were absolutely the right place for this movie,” Weintraub, who was the subject of ‘His Way,’ said in a statement. “I am thrilled that we have the incomparable Michael Douglas to inhabit the role of Liberace, as well as the exceptional Matt Damon to play the pivotal part of Scott Thorson. Putting these two fine actors in the creative hands of Steven Soderbergh — it doesn’t get better than that!”
Production for ‘Behind the Candelabra’ is slated to kick off with Douglas and Damon next year.
