“Footloose” is a beloved 1984 classic starring Kevin Bacon as a guy who brings dance to a town where any gyrations are illegal. The original has many fans, but how did the 2011 remake starring Kenny Wormald and “Dancing With the Stars”‘ Julianne Hough fair? On the whole, it would seem that it fared fairly well.

The film garnered a 71% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, one point below the audience’s rating. Audiences tend to be more lenient than critics, so to see the ratings neck-and-neck is actually refreshing, meaning that the film has enough glitz and punch to be entertaining to a mass audience while having enough moviemaking savvy to be appealing to most of those discerning critics.

However, there are some negatives that can be read into the rating. Overall, the film has been received as a fun, competent revision of the original even though it will surely never garner any hardcore fans as the original. This conclusion is also evident in the mildly successful rating of 71%. Also evident in the rating is that the film obviously didn’t tread any new ground to make it contemptible to fans and critics and didn’t fail in the familiar road it took. Basically, the rating can be interpreted as reflecting that film is serviceable, despite all of the hardcore dancing.
