According to The Hollywood Reporter, a source close to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has told the site that Ricky Gervais may be the host of the Golden Globes even after the controversy he sparked when he hosted it in January. Maybe I’m just jaded, but who didn’t see this happening? How could NBC or the HFPA not have Gervais back even if he made half of Hollywood angry?
The source told the site that the senior vp specials at NBC, Douglas Vaughn, and HFPA president Aida Takla-O’Reilly had dinner with Gervais in Paris in order to discuss a potential deal. The source wouldn’t confirm if an offer had been made, but the New York Post is reporting an offer has been officially put on the table.
Even though the jokes Gervais made when he hosted the Golden Globes were reviled by a lot of Hollywood attendees and even prompted HFPA president Philip Berk to tell The Hollywood Reporter that the comedian “definitely crossed the line,” the association did say that the telecast had ratings that was “among the best we’ve ever had and we’re pleased.” And even Berk did add to his statement about Gervais crossing the line that “[s]ome of the things were totally unacceptable. But that’s Ricky. When you hire Ricky Gervais, you expect the unexpected.”
