Horror master George Romero presents a 2nd volume anthology of three horror short films.
The Gorge – three friends go spelunking and get trapped in a cave. They have to resort to drastic measures in order to stay alive. This one had some cheesy gore effects, but the story itself was decent.
On Sabbath Hill – a college professor gets a shock when one of his students whom he’s sleeping with commits suicide during class after he breaks off the relationship. Feigning indifference at first, the ghost of the girl or possibly guild soon starts breaking him down. I thought this one was a little slow and the part where the school janitor is waxing the floor that still had blood on it was lazy directing, but the ending was good.
Dust – a scientist at a high-tech lab discovers a possible cure for cancer. A security guard steals some of the “dust” to cure his terminally ill wife, but with some horrific consequences. I get the whole part about the security guard loving his wife enough to make her well again, but what happened afterwards was like watching geriatric soft-core porn; while funny, it was a little uncomfortable. However, the ending was creepy and the story was intriguing.
There was only one special feature, a making of segment which ran on too long for my taste. Volume 1 was annoyingly bad, and thankfully they redeemed themselves content wise on volume 2. George Romero could start a series with films like these since Tales from the Darkside and Tales From the Crypt are long gone; and some people don’t have the patience to invest time on reoccurring characters and drawn out story lines.
