Odds are, when you consider the horror genre in general, you’re thinking bloodbaths, vicious villains and relentless scare tactics. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, wouldn’t you like to give a different type of scare a go for a change?
Ti West’s The Innkeepers focuses on The Yankee Pedlar Inn, a quaint hotel with a spooky past on the verge of being shut down for good. For the establishment’s final weekend in business, its sole remaining employees, Claire and Luke (Sara Paxton and Pat Healy), opt to spend the night so that when they’re not tending to the Inn’s mere three guests, they can explore and perhaps catch the resident ghost, Madeline O’Malley, in action.
If you’ve seen West’s The House of the Devil, you know what to expect with The Innkeepers. Rather than deliver a run-of-the-mill thrill ride, West strives to eliminate passivity and entice his audience to put the pieces together as the story progresses.
In honor of The Innkeepers’ February 3rd theatrical release, West flew out to a currently icy New York City to talk all about his filmmaking style, writing the script, gathering his production resources, working with Sara Paxton and Pat Healy, and much more.
