According to CinemaBlend, Paul Giamatti suggested to IFC during the Sundance Film Festival that the film adaptation of Eric Powell’s comic “The Goon” might not be getting made due to the lack of funds. “I have no idea what the hell happened,” he said in the interview. “I asked and no one knows. I guess they just ran out of money.” However, CinemaBlend has posted an update on “The Goon,” and it appears that Giamatti put his foot in his mouth.
According to the update, Powell went to his website to tell the truth about the fate of the movie. According to Powell, the film is still in development and David Fincher and Blur Studios are still in the process of looking financial backing. Powell said the movie never had to run out of money because they didn’t have any money in the first place.
Giamatti sent an email to Powell apologizing for what he told IFC. Powell wrote, “I just got an email from Giamatti saying he feels like a douche that this became a topic. He did say that he facetiously muttered, ‘Maybe they can’t get the money,’ but never said anything about money drying up. But as everyone knows, this is how the internet works.” In any case, no bridges have been burned and Giamatti is still on for voicing Franky. “His time already devoted to this project is greatly appreciated,” wrote Powell.
