Michael Bay will be returning to direct ‘Transformers 4,’ which will be a reboot of the popular series, Collider is reporting. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has confirmed the news, and Paramount has scheduled the movie for a June 29, 2014 release date.
Di Bonaventure reaffirmed the news to MTV that Bay is going to direct the third ‘Transformers’ sequel, and it’s going to be released in 2014. “We’re excited and I think the challenge there is we really are going to do a reboot, and what that’s going to be we don’t even know yet.”
The news comes after Bay said he would leave the ‘Transformers’ franchise after 2011’s summer hit second sequel, ‘Dark of the Moon.’ However, reports began circulating in December that he was considering returning. At the time, the fimmaker said he hadn’t yet solidified what movies he would be helming after his upcoming film ‘Pain and Gain.’
Reports are also speculating that ‘Transformers 4’ will follow in the footsteps of ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliations,’ in the fact that a couple of characters from the original may carry over. But it will be a new story with new characters.
Di bonaventura said ‘Transformers 4’ will be a hybrid, and won’t be how he perceives ‘Spider-Man’ is rebooting. “It’s an evolution. There’s still continuity that’s going on, and yet there’ll be a lot of new cast,” the producer said. He added that he’s unsure if any of the original cast will return, but it will be a new story. “The characters that would certainly come along would be Optimus and Bumblebee, I’m sure,” he added.
