This episode made David look more like a cad in the “real world” than the noble man he is in Fairy Tale Land, and it also brought home the point of the entire show, which is that choices come with a price, and sometimes, the price is steep.
In Storybrooke, Emma finally meets with the mystery guy. He reveals his name–August W. Booth (what could his name mean?) and he reveals to Emma a well that is supposed to have magical powers, according to legend. Also, after repairing Henry’s book, he returns it to Emma, albeit mysteriously.
David and Mary Margaret are still in relationship limbo. Mary Margaret decides to put the gauntlet down on David, telling him that he has to tell Kathryn about their relationship. David says he will, but he immediately backs down when he’s confronted with the reality of actually telling Kathryn about the relationship. Instead, when she decides to move to Boston to further her schooling, he tells her that he simply can’t connect with her, making it impossible for him to want to move to Boston with her.
Of course, Regina eventually tells Kathryn about the affair David’s been having, and then everything goes out the window. Kathryn goes to Mary Margaret’s school and slaps her in front of everyone, and once Mary Margaret realizes that David did not do what he said he was going to do, Mary Margaret decides to break off her relationship with him. Even though he didn’t want anyone to get hurt, everyone did–Mary Margaret is now being constantly tormented by the townspeople, David is seen as an idiot, and Kathryn is the victim.
Kathryn decides to let go of the past and move to Boston anyway, much to the dismay of Regina, who originally told Kathryn about the affair simply to break up David and Mary Margaret. However, once Kathryn gets to the edge of Storybrooke, she has disappeared, and it is the gym teacher who finds her wrecked car.
In Fairy Tale Land, Prince James is in search of Snow White. Abigail decides to help him only if he helps her with her own tragedy–a lost love. She shows the body of her love, Frederick, to James, stating that he was turned to gold by King Midas’ curse. What James has to do is get water from a magical lake that is guarded by a monster. No man has come back alive, and James eventually figures out why–the monster is a beautiful siren that can change form into any woman a man desires. She changes into Snow White, and for a while, we think James has succumbed, but he kills the siren and returns with the water. Frederick is restored and Abigail is reunited with her love. James continues to go in search of Snow White, picking up Red Riding Hood along the way.
