This is an episode that is intriguing for many reasons–for one, we don’t see the Mayor much. Secondly, we don’t see Emma that much either. Thirdly, we learn more about the town drunk, Leroy.
In Storybrooke, Leroy is the town’s most repugnant character, but he’s actually just misunderstood. He drinks because he’s depressed. He decides to volunteer for Mary Margaret’s Miner’s Day Festival candle booth in order to help the nuns pay their rent. One nun in particular makes him want to help–the nun Astrid. The goal Leroy is trying to achieve is to sell all of the candles and raise beaucoup money for the nuns, however, it’s been statistically hard to sell the candles each year, and it’s even harder this year since no one wants to have anything to do with Mary Margaret. However, due to his perseverance and the fact that Astrid is the only person that has made him believe in himself, Leroy gets the candles sold, albeit breaking a few rules–he cuts off everyone’s power.
Meanwhile, Emma is beginning an investigation of Kathryn’s disappearance. The main suspect is David, through the schemes of the Mayor and Sidney.
In Fairy Tale Land, we see how the trainee fairy Nova actually aids in the unusual behavior of the dwarf Dreamy–the fairy dust she drops allows him to think outside of the usual parameters of other dwarves, including the ability to love.
Later on, Dreamy and Nova meet and fall in love. However, on the eve of their escape plan to a ship to tour the world, the Blue Fairy and the dwarf Bossy talk him out of it, saying that Nova will lose her wings if she goes with him. The Blue Fairy does even more damage when she says that dwarves aren’t supposed to be born with the ability to love. Letting his love go is what changes Dreamy to Grumpy.
