‘Thor’ director Kenneth Branagh is negotiating with Paramount to helm the upcoming Jack Ryan reboot, Slashfilm is reporting. With the film seeing several different writers and directors, including ‘Lost’s Jack Bender, the project has had trouble getting off the ground. But Branagh, who worked with Paramount on last spring’s hit superhero movie, is considering the project.
The new film, which is reportedly being called ‘Jack Ryan,’ was reportedly taking so long to get started because Bender was getting tired of the endless development from the producers of the movie. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura wanted to make ‘Jack Ryan’ into an action film, while Paramount executives wanted to turn it into a thriller. Screenwriter David Koepp was supposed to determine what genre the film would fall into.
Koepp’s new draft has reportedly blended the genres together, and has made a prequel that creates a new Jack. Chris Pine is set to play the title character, taking over for Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford, who portrayed the Tom Clancy character in the movies ‘The Hunt For Red October’ and ‘Patriot Games.’ Branagh will reportedly bring together the various tonal and narrative impulses of di Bonaventura, Pine and Paramount.
