Check out the new trailer for the latest Sacha Baron Cohen comedy, “The Dictator.” As I’ve said before, this film seems to be a straight comedy rather than Baron Cohen’s other “man-on-the-street” candid-types of comedies. Everyone seems to be in on the joke.
However, after watching the trailer, my mind is working overtime. When did a romantic subplot get in this? I thought this was going to strictly be a scathing critique of the mind of a dictator in the 21st century–now I’ve got a distinct “Emperor’s New Groove” feel, which, while I love that Disney film, is a bit confusing to me when it comes to what I’m used to from a Baron Cohen film. But, maybe the whole dictator-meets-girl thing won’t turn out like I think/fear. In any case, this will make for an interesting screening.
“The Dictator,” directed by Larry Charles, is written by Baron Cohen as well as Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel. The film also stars Anna Faris and Ben Kingsley. The official synopsis of the film is:
“The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.”
The film will be in theaters May 11. This film is also yet to be rated, but I expect it’ll have an R-rating. PG-13 might be a little unrealistic for this type of film.
