Danny McBride has signed on to write, produce and star in ‘Clown,’ the Warner Bros. remake of the Danish dark comedy ‘Klovn,’ Slashfilm is reporting. ‘The Hangover’ director Todd Phillips, as well as Casper Christensen and Frank Hyam, who created the original sitcom that ‘Klovn’ is based on, will also produce the remake.
The ‘Klovn’ series ran for six seasons between 2005 and 2009 before being made into a feature film sequel in 2010. Mikkel Norgaard directed the movie, which follows two men named Casper and Frank, who are looking forward to a wild, man-only canoe trip. But Frank discovers his girlfriend is pregnant, and decides to prove he’s ready to be a father by bringing her 11-year-old son on the trip.
‘Klovn,’ which hasn’t found a large following in the U.S. yet, has been compared to such show as ‘Curb Your enthusiasm’ and ‘It’s Always Funny in Philadelphia.’ The series takes humor from horrible human behavior and awkward situations.
While the ‘Klovn’ film has been called the Danish ‘Hangover,’ McBride and Phillips are expected to clean up the material for American audiences. There has been no start or release date yet for ‘Clown,’ but McBride is expected to begin working on it soon.
