Google is celebrating Earth Day today with a new flower Doodle. The search engine has replaced its official logo on its homepage with an interactive doodle that transforms the letters of its name into flowers.
The doodle shows Google’s logo spelled in leaves on top of a patch of dirt. The leaves subsequently grow red, blue and yellow flowers. When users click on the doodle, information about Earth Day is loaded. Links to such information as YouTube videos about gardening, a Google Map that displays the weather in various locations, a tomato plants image search page, a recipe for chicken pasta, a Google+ photos page where users can share pictures of their gardens and another Google+ page about gardens are loaded.
Other pages that are loaded when the doodle is clicked on is an offer for discounted flower seeds, a Maps page that shows community gardens, community supported agriculture farmers markets and community farms. There is also information about Google partnering with friends of the Urban forest to plant trees at San Francisco schools.
Earth Day was originally started by a Wisconsin senator who witnessed an oil spill off the coast of California in 1969. He called for the first Earth Day to be observed on April 22 of the following year.
