In honor of the 138th birthday of celebrated Egyptologist Howard Carter, Google is celebrating with a new Doodle. The search engine replaced its official logo on its homepage with a drawing that represents a few of the thousands of objects that were removed from the tomb of Tutankamun, which the English archaeologist discovered.
A worker found the steps to the intact tomb in 1922, and a laborious excavation followed. The removal of the objects from the tomb took almost a decade. Carter had been searching for the burial sites of ancient pharaohs for nearly three decades when he discovered the tomb of the 18th-dynasty of Tutankhamun’s tomb, more than 3,000 years after his death.
Carter’s discovery of the tomb turned him into a global celebrity. He was quickly immersed in popular culture, and has appeared in music and movies.
After being born in London on May 9, 1874, Carter traveled to Egypt when he was a teenager. He was appointed to the position of the Egyptian Antiquities Service while in his 20s. Carter died at the age of 64 in 1939 in London, from lymphoma. His legacy remains in tact, due to not only discovering the tomb, but also the numerous artifacts he found inside as well.
