Christian Bale and producer Emma Thomas are both revealing the high levels of pain and brutality that will be featured in ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ Comic Book Movie is reporting. The actor discussed the pain that overcame his title character in the anticipated last installment of Christopher Nolan’s successful Batman series. Thomas, Nolan’s wife, also spoke about the ruthlessness Bane brings to the story.
Of Batman, Bale said “he’s always had this need, this drive, to take action because of the tragedy that befell him. He’s not in the healthiest of places, in many ways.”
While the plot of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is still under wraps, Bale added that pain is the one constant in Batman’s life. “But I think it’s more about him feeling the consequences of a life that’s entirely directed by pain, and holding onto that pain.” The actor added that Bruce Wayne continues to remain Batman “in order to maybe self-destruct.”
For the brutality, Thomas said that Batman faces his biggest challenge yet in the second sequel. “I would say in terms of brutality, this one exceeds the last one. This is the first episode that Batman’s ever physically been taken,” she said.
Thomas also called Bane a brute. He’s “about physical strength. We’re giving Batman someone truly worthy of him.”
