Nick Cassavetes has signed onto direct the upcoming film ‘Cali’ with Kristen Stewart in the lead, Collider is reporting. The action comedy, which is expected to be released next year, follows two San Fernando Valley lovers in Los Angeles who sell a fake snuff film. The two lovers subsequently take off with the money. Years later, the girl, played by Stewart, returns from the dead in order to save her younger sister, who she abandoned.
Stewart will be receiving her first producer credit on ‘Cali’ as well. The film greatly deviates from the ‘Twilight’ series, as her lead character comes face-to-face with homicidal porn stars, stoner vet techs and an unstoppable killer in a cowboy hat.
‘Cali’ will be produced by Voltage Prods and New School Media. It was written by Michael Diliberti, who will serve as a producer on the film. Voltage will sell the movie at the Cannes Fillm Market, and it’s expected to begin shooting later this summer.
For Cassavetes, ‘Cali’ comes after receiving recognition for such diverse films as the romantic drama ‘The Notebook’ and the crime drama ‘Alpha Dog.’ The filmmaker also helmed the drama ‘My Sister’s Keeper.’ The director has also reportedly just finished filming the drug-centered dramedy ‘Yellow,’ which stars Lucy Punch, Ray Liotta and Sienna Miller.
