Pope Benedict participated in the Pentecost today after his personal butler was formally charged with stealing confidential papal documents, Reuters is reporting. The pope celebrated a mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on the day when the church teaches that the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles. The pope looked weary as the Vatican is preparing for more scandal in the case.
The pope made no reference to the scandal about his butler, Paolo Gabriele, or his arrest during his two public appearances today. The Pentecost is regarded as a celebration of the birth of the church, but the pope reportedly looked saddened and pained.
But Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, who was once a candidate for the papacy, spoke about the case. He said that the scandal should prompt the Church to win back the trust of the faithful. He also said the pope felt betrayed by Gabriele, who served as his personal butler until Wednesday night. The Vatican added that they wouldn’t rule out more arrests, especially if Gabriele says he had any accomplices.
The documents Gabriele is accused of leaking contain highly sensitive documents. Some of the documents allege cronyism and corruption in Vatican contracts with Italian companies.
