Sony Pictures’ anticipated superhero film ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ is breaking box office records in overseas markets, Comic Book Movie is reporting. The Marc Webb-directed 3D reboot opened in several Asian markets this weekend, and broke records set by ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ earlier this year.
‘The Amazing Spider-Man,’ which is set to hit theaters in the United States on Tuesday, debuted to $13 million in Korea. The movie has also reportedly drew in over $5 million more than ‘The Avengers,’ which was previously the biggest opening there ever for an American film. The openings in Hong Kong, the Philippines and Singapore have also been called huge.
‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ follows Peter Parker as he tries to figure out who he is and how he became the person he is today. As he tries to put the pieces of his past together, he uncovers a secret of his father’s, which will ultimately shape his destiny as the title superhero. The film sets out a different side of the Peter Parker story.
Andrew Garfield plays the title character, with his real-life girlfriend, Emma Stone, portraying the superhero’s love, Gwen Stacy. Denis Leary plays George Stacy, Rhys Ifans portrays villain Curt Conners and Martin Sheen and Sally Field playing Peter’s uncle and aunt, Ben and May Parker.
