With a spaghetti western centered on slavery potentially being a hard sell, The Weinstein Company has already started its marketing campaign for Quentin Tarantiono’s ‘Django Unchained.’ The studio has released a new one-minute teaser spot for the western, IndieWire is reporting. While the new trailer features footage already featured in previous spots, there are extra images of two of the film’s actors, Samuel L. Jackson and Kerry Washington.
Of films that have previously focused on slavery, ‘Django Unchained’ producer Reginald Hudlin told Ebony that he feels there aren’t many great entries in the genre. He said he’s been “very frank about how I hated 90 percent of them…but you’re supposed to swallow it anyways, because it’s supposed to be good for you.” He added that he thinks “these movies should be exciting, they should be action-packed.”
Hudlin added that he feels it’s important to see the title character, played by Jamie Foxx, whipping a slave master in the movie, which is set to hit theaters on Christmas Day. “We have a black man beat a white slave master with his own whip, which, as far as I know, has never happened in the history of cinema. It’s like, Wow, we’re doing our jobs,” Hudlin said.
