Magnolia Pictures has acquired the North American rights to ‘Best Man Down,’ the upcoming comedy-drama from writer-director Ted Koland. The film stars Justin Long, Jess Weixler, Tyler Labine, Addison Timlin and Frances O’Connor. Magnolia plans to release the film through their Ultra VOD program over the summer, debuting the comedy on all VOD platforms a month before its theatrical release.
‘Best Man Down’ follows a bride and groom-Kristin, played by Weixler, and Scott, portrayed by Long-whose obnoxious best man, Lumpy, played by Labine, unexpectedly dies at their destination wedding in Phoenix. The couple is forced to cancel their wedding and fly home to the Midwest to plan his funeral. But when they arrive, they realize there was more to their friend than they realized.
“We are pleased to be handling ‘Best Man Down,’ a charming film that features excellent performances from a completely winning cast,” Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles said.
“It’s incredibly exciting to partner with Magnolia on my first film, a company that’s made a brand for itself by bringing unique, compelling stories to the screen,” Koland said of the film distributor.
‘Best Man Down’ was produced by David Abbitt, Jen Roskind and Sharyn Steele. The deal for Magnolia to distribute the movie was negotiated by the company’s Director of Acquisitions, Peter Van Steemberg, Preferred Content and Gersh, on behalf of the filmmakers. The movie was financed by Koda Entertainment.
