Kristen Stewart’s new adventure drama ‘On The Road’ has received a nationwide VOD and theatrical premiere date of March 22, following its late 2012 awards qualifying run. The film will expand to over 150 playdates, as well as being available on demand on cable systems across America.
Besides the ‘Twilight’ actress, director Walter Salles’ take on the iconic novel of the same name by Jack Kerouac also stars Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley and Kirsten Dunst. It also features cameo appearances by Amy Adams, Elizabeth Moss and Viggo Mortensen. The film was penned by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jose Rivera.
‘On the Road’ was produced by Nathaneal Karmitz, Charles Gillibert, Rebecca Yeldham and Roman Coppola for American Zoetrope. Executive producer Francis Ford Coppola has developing the project since 1978.
‘On the Road’ follows young New York City writer Sal Paradise (Riley), whose life is ultimately redefined by the arrival of Dean Moriarty (Hedlund), a free-spirited, fearless Westerner. Dean and his girlfriend, Marylou (Stewart), are living a carefree style, and urge Sam to join them on a personal quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism surrounding them. They travel across the country in search of themselves, through the use of drugs, jazz and poetry in the aftermath of World War II.
Along the way, the trio’s pursuit of the pure essence of experience is continuously shaped by their interactions with the people they meet along the way, including Camille (Dunst). Dean ultimately marries and has children with Camille, feeling that he should settle down, but still continues to live his care-free lifestyle with Marylou and Sal.
