A group of strangers are invited to a bar by a mutual ex-lover named Nikki (Katee Sackhoff) whom has recently been released from a mental institution after murdering an abusive ex boyfriend. They all tell their increasingly sad and strange tales of their relationships and breakups with Nikki. Zachary (Seth Green) is Nikki’s first boyfriend and first love, Miranda (Michelle Trachtenberg) is Nikki’s ex lover – the only one to actually break up with Nikki and Marvin (Harold Perrineau) is Nikki’s jazz band mate and ex boyfriend who might or might not have contributed to her self destruction. Nikki then shows up with her new lover in tow – Bert Mayfair, her lawyer who managed to her get a reduced sentence and “cured” of insanity. Nikki reveals to all of them that they are unknowingly playing a part in her biggest insane masterpiece of revenge.
The negative: The character development was a little lax. It’s almost completely dialogue driven and it’s low budget so there’s minimal set design. These aren’t necessarily negative, but some people will get bored.
The positive: The characters are clever and there are plot twists all around. Writer Scott Lew’s mind was working at 100mph down a steep hill with no brakes in order to keep this story going without any downtime. You could tell he really put a lot of love into these characters; even the evil characters were likeable.
The special features include the awe-inspiring by documentary “Jujitsu-ing Reality” about writer Scott Lew living and functioning with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS), which is truly worth watching even if by some slim chance you don’t like the movie.
I liked it. Sexy Evil Genius was a lot of fun.
