Director Franck Khalfoun’s horror thriller ‘Maniac,’ which first gained attention at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, has finally gained distribution in America. After being picked up by IFC Midnight, the film, which stars Elijah Wood, has also received its first official American trailer. Apple has released the new trailer and poster for the film on its website.
Besides Cannes, ‘Maniac’ also played at the 2012 Melbourne International Film Festival and the 2012 Zurich Film Festival. It’s set to be released in select American theaters and on VOD on June 21.
‘Maniac’ was co-written and produced by ‘The Hills Have Eyes’ and ‘High Tension’ writer-director Alexandre Aja. It The movie is a reboot of director William Lustig’s cult 1980 crime horror thriller of the same name.
‘Maniac’ follows a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back on the hunt. Frank (Wood) is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, whose life is changed when young artist Anna (Nora Arnezeder) appears, asking for his help with his next exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.
