The boogeyman is once again keeping people awake at night as he’s coming to life at Universal Studios Hollywood in an all-new maze, as part of Halloween Horror Nights. El Cucuy: The Boogeyman is the latest in the lineup of award-winning mazes that are set to open on September 20. ‘Machete Kills’ actor Danny Trejo is adding to the torment of El Cucuy’s dark legend by giving a chilling narration to the maze.
In Mexico, the boogeyman is known as El Cucuy, which is a mythical ghost-monster that sports pointed teeth and razor-sharp claws. There is some belief that it’s an evil spirit which lurks in desolate caves and ventures into homes late at night. It lies under beds, in closets and on rooftops in search of disobedient children. Parents throughout Mexico, Latin America and the United States warn their children to behave so that El Cucuy won’t prey on them.
“I remember my mother telling me about El Cucuy as a little kid and it freaked me out,” said Trejo, who is also working as a Creative Consultant on the maze. “I grew up with it and I told it to my kids, too. I can’t wait to check it out at Halloween Horror Nights.”
Trejo narrates the legend through the eyes of the monster. Maze-goers will follow the actor’s voice as it guides them into gruesome sights ravaged by the shape-shift El Cucuy, including a child’s birthday part gone horribly awry. Maze-goers are also brought through a family room, a child’s bedroom and closet, where a merciless attack is witnessed. After seeing lifeless bodies with gaping wounds emerged in pools of blood, maze-goers will enter El Cucuy’s evil cave.
The event’s Creative Director, John Murdy, said he pictured Trejo “as the voice of the monster, so we’re thrilled to be working with him to bring the terrifying legend of El Cucuy to life at Halloween Horror Nights.”
