When will people finally learn that in the age of the Internet, it’s just not smart to be a racist, a homophobe or a jerk in public or on the Internet? Remember the girl who flipped out on the cashiers at Dunkin’ Donuts? Or how about the kids who thought it was a good idea to dress as Trayvon Martin for Halloween? And of course, we’re still talking about Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty and his anti-gay comments in GQ Magazine.
The latest in the long line of people who now wish they’d kept their mouths shut and their phones off is Justine Sacco, formerly the Chief Communications Director for Barry Diller media conglomerate IAC. Right before her flight for South Africa departed, she Tweeted this:
“Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!
The Internet swiftly took action, setting up hashtags and rage donations and websites. IAC released a statement denouncing her tweet, and she’s since been fired.
