It’s one of the best times of the year for movie fans–it’s time for the Oscar nomination list! Like with every list every year, there are tons of expected nominations, tons of surprises and tons of snubs. Every “snub” is subjective, which leads people to have arguments for and against certain nominations. But that’s also part of the Oscar nomination tradition–having tons of arguments with your friends to the point that you don’t even know why you’re friends anymore. Hopefully your discussions don’t get that deep, though.
It was expected that “12 Years A Slave,” “Gravity,” and “American Hustle” was going to get the lions’ share of nods, with “Gravity” and “American Hustle” receiving 10 nominations and “12 Years A Slave” getting nine. “Captain Phillips” is also in contention for some serious hardware, with one surprise being Barkhad Abdi receiving a nomination for supporting actor. However, Tom Hanks, a usual suspect when it comes to Oscar nominations, was left out of the running this time around.
Another snub came from the original song nominations. Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful,” an original song for “The Great Gatsby,” didn’t receive a nomination, which is sure to make her fans really irritated with the Academy.
You can watch the announcement ceremony and take a look at the full listing of nominees below the post. What do you think about this year’s nominees? Give your opinions in the comments section below! The Academy Awards ceremony airs March 2 at 7pm ET/4 pm PT.
