Fox seems to be on a roll with greenlighting exciting shows. The shows they’ve let get to the pilot stage have storylines that excite the imagination and, even better, most of the shows are paving the way in terms of diversity. “Empire” seems to be no different.
The show, which comes from Lee Daniels, stars Terrence Howard as Lucious Lyon, the tough and charming head of fictional record label Empire Entertainment. Taraji P. Henson plays his ex-wife, Cookie Lyon, who has served time in prison and is now coming to get what she feels is owed to her. Jussie Smollet plays Jamal, Lucious and Cookie’s son, who is an up-and-coming rapper who is also gay. Jamal’s sexuality is something Lucious doesn’t know how to deal with. Other actors include Macy Gray, who will play Tasha, a woman in an affair with Hakeem Lyon (played by Bryshere Y. Gray-no relation), Lucious’ youngest and favorite son who is poised to take over the family business. Trai Byers plays Lucious’s oldest son Andre, who is intelligent and dangerous; Grace Gealey plays Lucious’ current girlfriend and the head of A&R for Empire, Anika; Gabourey Sidibe plays Lucious’ assistant Becky and Malik Yoba plays Lucious’ longtime friend and Empire’s chairman of the board.
TVLine posted the first look image exclusively on their site, and from looking at it, it seems like the potential for world-class drama is at hand! I can’t wait!
