Great news, “Iron Man” fans! You’ll be able to see Tony Stark once again in an upcoming Marvel film! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his rock star billionaire superhero role in “Captain America 3.”
“Captain America 3” will pit Iron Man against Captain America as the film delves into the “Civil War” comic book storyline. In “Captain America 3” and “Civil War,” Iron Man supports the government’s Superhero Registration Act, which makes superheroes reveal their identities and work as a police force against America’s threats. Stark is all for this–he’s made his name as a businessman-superhero who uses his status as a brand–while Captain America is against the government’s possible invasion of rights.
Just like how Iron man is fighting against Captain America, Downey was reportedly fighting against Disney and Marvel in order to secure a larger role (and a larger paycheck). According to Variety’s sources, Marvel only wanted Downey for a small role, but Downey wanted his character to have a much bigger role. This rubbed Marvel Entertainment chief Ike Perlmutter the wrong way and wanted the screenwriters to write Iron Man out of the script completely. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige kept up talks with Downey’s CAA representatives and it would seem that it was Feige’s grand idea of the “Civil War” aspect that helped set the stage for the “Captain America 3” deal to take place.
