Lucy Lawless is coming back to genre television with her role as Ruby in the upcoming STARZ original series, “Ash vs Evil Dead.” The series, the follow-up to “The Evil Dead” cult horror film franchise, will begin shooting in New Zealand this spring with the intention of airing sometime late 2015.
Lawless’ character Ruby is described as “myopic in her quest to hunt down the source of the recent Evil outbreaks.” The only issue with her quest is that she believes Ash to be the source of the horrors she aims to put down.
Lawless will once again work with executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, who led her to warrior greatness in “Xena: Warrior Princess” and “Spartacus.” She has also worked with the two in several films, such as Tapert’s “Boogeyman” and Raimi’s “Spider Man.”
“Ash vs Evil Dead” also stars Bruce Campbell (who will also serve as an executive producer), Ray Santiago, Jill Marie Jones and Dana DeLorenzo. The series will be 10 episodes long with Campbell reprising his role as Ash, described as “the stock boy, aging Lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead.” Ash has to save the world once again when a Deadite plague is released, threatening to destroy the world’s population. Ash has to get his act together while saving mankind from destruction.
Raimi will direct the first episode, which he also wrote with Ivan Raimi, (“Darkman,” “Army of Darkness,” “Drag Me to Hell”) Tom Spezialy (“Chuck,” “Reaper,” “Desperate Housewives”) and Craig DiGregorio (“Workaholics,” “Chuck”), who will also serve as executive producer and showrunner. Ivan Raimi will co-executive produce, Aaron Lam (“Spartacus”) will act as a producer.
