Fans of Johnny Depp have had it rough for the past couple of years. The most we’ve seen the actor in is pirate garb or something else equally ridiculous. In “Black Mass,” Depp’s still in a costume, but this time, in “Black Mass,” he in a much more dramatic (and scary role) – as James “Whitey” Bulger, the notorious mobster.

“Black Mass,” directed Scott Cooper, tells the story of an FBI agent (played by Joel Edgerton) who wants Whitey Bulger to help him take down the Italian mob. However, the alliance gets quickly out of hand.

“In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.”

The film also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Rory Cochrane, Kevin Bacon, W. Earl Brown, Dakota Johnson, David Harbour, Corey Stoll, Julianne Nicholson, Peter Sarsgaard, Adam Scott and Juno Temple. The film is based on the book by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill, with the adapted screenplay by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth.

Take a look at the trailer below to see what you think of Depp playing the dangerous criminal. “Black Mass” comes to theaters Sept. 18 from Warner Bros. Pictures, Cross Creek Pictures and RatPac-Dune Entertainment. You can also follow “Black Mass” on Facebook.
