The most engaging and emotional movies are often those that incorporate meaningful societal issues into their captivating plot-lines and characters. That’s certainly the case with the new gritty, realistic and timely film, ‘From Nowhere,’ which was written and directed by Matthew Newton. The drama, which stars Julianne Nicholson and Denis O’Hare, is set to have its world premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. As Shockya prepares to return to the Austin-based festival that’s held every year in March, we’re debuting three new photos featuring the SAG Award-nominated actress, as well as two of her younger, up-and-coming co-stars.
‘From Nowhere’ features an ensemble cast that’s led by Nicholson, who plays a committed teacher, and O’Hare, who portrays a corporate lawyer who’s out of his comfort zone as he works to secure the papers necessary for three undocumented teenagers to stay in the USA after high school graduation. Filmed on location in the Bronx, New York, the drama follows a Dominican girl, an African boy and a Peruvian girl as they are forced to grow up prematurely, and navigate significant immigration challenges to stay in the country where they have grown up and call home. As graduation nears, the three teenagers just want to be with their friends, fall in love and push back against authority.
No Place Like Film produced ‘From Nowhere’ with Newton and his co-scribe, Kate Ballen. The drama also stars J. Mallory McCree, Chinasa Oghuagu and Jim Norton.
“We’re all incredibly excited to host the world premiere of ‘From Nowhere’ at South By Southwest,” Newton said. “‘From Nowhere’ is inspired by the real experiences of my co-writer, Kate Ballen, who spent 10 years teaching undocumented teenagers at a Bronx high school, so it’s a great privilege to help give a voice to a group of young people whose circumstances mean they can’t speak up for themselves. We shot the film on location on the streets of the Bronx and inside a real high school, and there was a true sense of immediacy to the characters’ challenges – we would literally travel to the set each morning reading stories in the newspaper dealing with exactly the issues we were about to film that day.”
