The success of popular professional sports can often times come at the expense of the athletes who helped make them famous. Along with exploring the day to day lives of popular MMA fighters, the highly anticipated documentary, ‘The Hurt Business,’ also examines how the sport went from being shunned to the popular entertainment operation it is today. In honor of the film being released in theaters nationwide on September 29, Shockya has an exclusive new clip, titled ‘Gary Goodridge Recounts Devastating Concussion.’
Goodridge, who’s a legend within the world of MMA, is also one of the few outspoken athletes who has admitted he has dementia, which was caused by his extensive fighting career. ‘Gary Goodridge Recounts Devastating Concussion’ was filmed as he was being treated at the Cleveland Clinic, where they are conducting groundbreaking studies on the brain injuries caused by combat sports.
‘The Hurt Business’ is the latest directorial effort from renowned documentary filmmaker, Vlad Yudin, who’s also known for helming the sports-driven film, ‘Generation Iron.’ Yudin also produced his latest documentary with Edwin Mejia of The Vladar Company, and Oscar winner Jim Czarnecki.
‘The Hurt Business’ follows the daily lives of such UFC Champions Jon “Bones” Jones, Rashad “Suga” Evans, Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm. Through firsthand telling of their remarkable experiences, the complete history and culture of MMA is explored in a more expansive way than ever before. Additionally, contributions from leading psychologists, neurologists, sociologists and government officials analyze the grim prevalence of brain trauma, and the implications of MMA’s increased popularity on our society. The documentary also reveals how a sport that had until recently been illegal became not only accepted, but glamorized by the mainstream culture.
