Ben Affleck is seizing the opportunity to gain power and money in the final official trailer for his upcoming crime thriller, ‘Live by Night.’ The drama marks the filmmaker’s first directorial effort since he won the BAFTA and Golden Globe Awards for Best Director in 2013 for the historical drama, ‘Argo.’
Affleck also wrote the screenplay for ‘Live by Night,’ which is based on the 2012 award-winning best-selling crime novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane. The movie adaptation marks the second collaboration for the fellow Boston natives, following the acclaimed 2007 drama, ‘Gone Baby Gone.’
‘Live by Night’ is set in the roaring ’20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve. Joe Coughlin (Affleck), the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules, and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.
‘Live by Night’ was produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson, under the Appian Way banner, as well as Affleck and Jennifer Todd for Pearl Street Films. Chris Brigham, Chay Carter and Dennis Lehane served as executive producers.
In addition to Affleck, the drama also stars Elle Fanning, Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana and Oscar winner Chris Cooper. The cast is also joined on screen by Max Casella, J.D. Evermore, Remo Girone, Robert Glenister, Anthony Michael Hall, Matthew Maher, Miguel J. Pimentel, Chris Sullivan and Titus Welliver.
Slated for release on January 13, 2017, ‘Live By Night’ is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures. The crime thriller is set to be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
