Actor and producer Akshay Kumar is taking on his next social battle with his upcoming biopic, ‘Padman.’ The movie explores how Kumar’s character, who’s a determined inventor, incites scandal in rural India when he uproots his family and tries to develop and market a low-cost sanitary pad.
The inventor’s provocation of the gossip can be seen in the just-released trailer for the upcoming comedy-drama. The trailer for ‘Padman’ is supporting Sony Pictures Entertainment’s theatrical release of the the film on January 26 in the United States and around the world.
The biopic was directed by R. Balki (‘Paa,’ ‘Cheeni Kum’). In addition to Kumar, ‘Padman’ also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte. The movie is based on the true story of Arunachalam Muruganandam, as well as the short story, ‘The Sanitary Man of Sacred Land,’ from ‘The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad by Twinkle Khanna.
‘Padman’ is set in 2006, when Muruganandam invented a cost effective machine to provide sanitary napkins to the women of India. Until then, sanitary napkins were a luxury item that many women could not afford to use.
